I have to agree with you, it is a good book and like you said, worth every penny.

He was the president of the New York Horological Society and before he became a watchmaker, he ran a printing business in New York. Matter of fact, he kept the printing business going while he wrote many books on watch repair.

It is interesting to note, that HBF copied many of his topics from the works of others. For example, Wilkerson wrote many original books on watch repair that were for the most part very technical in natural, and many times difficult to comprehend. HBF copied many of the ideas that Wilkerson detailed in his books.

HBF was sort of like Ford. They didn't invent the car, only figured out a way to mass produce them. HBF made many books available to the masses that were getting involved in watch repair. His business really boomed in the days following WW2. Many men picked up the trade following the war, especially those with injuries.

I don't know if HBF used this method, I have not looked in his books for about 8 years, but how I do it is very simple. Was taught to me by Joe Saitta.

You can take a small tin, like what watch movements are stored in, cut the top out of the lid. Then take some watchmakers papers, one sheet will do, and place it between the tin and the lid. Press the lid over the paper. When this is done, punch a small hole in the center of the paper. When this is done, you can then take the collet and place it into the center of the hole, it will go to the other side.

Then all you have to do is turn the hairspring, and as the collet works its way down, the tangles remain to the top of the paper. The contrast between the blue steel hairspring and the paper makes it very easy to see the tangle.

You continue with this and as you go, you can remove the tangle by lifting one coil over the other or under the other.

This works great and the cost of the tool is cheap.

They may be just that. I have hundreds of old Bulova movements here both ladies and gents. All of the ones I have are finished and look very nice.

Maybe yours did come from the old Bulova school. I have several books here from the Bulova school and maybe they did use them for practice.
