Originally designed simply to house a watch movement and protect it from the outside environment, they moved from simple to elaborate.Ornate engravings were applied to both gold filled cases and to cases made using precious metals.  It is not uncommon to find very ornate solid gold cases that housed only a 7 jewel movement.
